The Burden of Strength - A Flash Fiction

Silver shackles singed its skin with every movement, but he dared not stay still. Its caretakers restricted its movements enough to prevent it from outrunning anything while still allowing it to keep up. Even for a valuable beast such as itself, falling behind meant certain death. As a dragon-mule, its only worth was in its strength. The many thousands of pounds of supplies that it hauled on its back was not a burden, but a point of pride. The caravan rolled on and the silver sizzled against its raw neck. If it could endure long enough and prove its loyalty, the collar would come off. Every step was made with that day in mind.
